The answer depends on what you expect from your website. Here are the three options, their advantages and their limits.
"Free" websites
Platforms such as Wix, Google Sites or the free plans of some hosts let you build a website without technical skills. To test an idea or present a hobby, they are perfect.
The limits quickly show for a business. Depending on the platform: an address like mysite.platform.com that looks unprofessional, a platform advertising banner on your website, features locked without a paid plan, limited SEO. And "free" often turns into a monthly subscription as soon as you want a real domain name.
AI website builders
AI generators produce a complete website, with text and images, in a few minutes. The result is often impressive for a first draft.
But the text is generic: it looks like thousands of other websites, does not really talk about your expertise and does not target your customers' keywords. The information can also be wrong (opening hours, services, prices), which requires careful proofreading. Finally, you remain dependent on the platform: it is rarely possible to take your website elsewhere.
The web agency
An agency designs a website around your business: your customers, your services, your area, your competitors. It writes content that sounds like you and is built for Google, optimises the speed and structure of the website, and supports you after launch.
The initial investment is higher, but the website works for you: it gets you found and makes people want to contact you. Simply check that you own the website and the domain name, and that you can change provider if needed.
How to choose
Just starting out, with a very tight budget and little at stake online? A free tool or an AI builder may be enough for a few months, as long as you proofread every text.
Do your customers search for you on Google, are you competing with other professionals in your town, or does your website need to generate quote requests? A professional website is a profitable investment.
A good question to ask yourself: how much is a new customer worth to you? If one or two customers a year are enough to pay for the website, the maths is simple.
